The EU LEADER support programme
LEADER is a European support programme which supports the development of rural areas. In the current funding period 2014-2020, Lüneburg Heath Nature Park Region has been supported with a total of € 2.8 million.
The LEADER programme’s name is an acronym of the French "Liaison Entreactions de Développement de l'Économique Rurale", which means "Links between actions for the development of the rural economy". The idea behind it is pooling energies and resources in rural areas by establishing partnerships between the public and private sectors under Local Action Groups. The regions themselves decide what is important to them and which projects should be promoted. LEADER is an open process - everyone is invited to get involved and implement its project ideas.
The Nature Park Region has been awarded € 2.8 million from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) as one of a total of 41 regions in Lower Saxony. The Local Action Group now has until 2020 to decide on how to use of the funds. The Regional Development Strategy (REK) is the basis for making the decision; it was developed together with dedicated citizens from the region in 2014. An overview of the contacts of all LEADER regions in Lower Saxony can be found on the website of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection.
